In 1980, after 97 years of existence, the Philadelphia Phillies finally became World Champions. With two pennants under their belts, the Phillies struggled to obtain a third and barely missed trips to the World Series in 1976, 1977 and 1978. The Kansas City Royals were also a perennial powerhouse team that couldn’t get over the hump and win the pennant in the late 1970’s. The 1980 World Series featured these two teams, with the Phillies winning in six games for the first World Series title in the history of their franchise.
