On September 1, 1989, acting commissioner Bart Giamatti died of a massive heart attack, ending a difficult 154 day term in which he faced with many difficult decisions. The 1989 World Series between the Oakland Athletics and the San Francisco Giants was played in the late commissioner’s honor. On October 17, 1989 the San Francisco bay area was rocked by a deadly earthquake, postponing the third game of the World Series at Candlestick Park. The series would resume ten days later as the Oakland A’s went on to beat the Giants in a four game sweep.
